Am I a candidate for a dental crown?

Whether you call them caps or covers, dental crowns are a common restorative procedure used in dentistry today. These restorations are custom-made for patients and are often recommended in situations where there are weakened or broken teeth. Drs. Gary McDowell and Ashley McDowell of Abington, PA are here to help with this or other restorative treatments to improve the function and health of the smile.

What is a dental crown?

The dental team at McDowell Dental Group will often recommend the fabrication and placement of dental crowns to patients who have broken or imperfect teeth that need to be restored or protected. The crown itself is a porcelain “cap” that is bonded over a natural adult tooth. It offers protection against damage and can also restore the shape and function of a tooth as well. Dental crowns are made of porcelain because this material is not only long-lasting and durable, but it mimics the appearance of natural tooth enamel. This makes it a cosmetic solution as well as a restorative and protective one.

Am I a candidate for a dental crown?

Dental crowns are commonly used in many areas of dentistry. They are custom-created for the patient to ensure they look natural. To determine if a patient is a candidate for a dental crown, they will want to schedule a consultation with Drs. Gary McDowell and Ashley McDowell. During this appointment, the patient will be assessed and a thorough evaluation will be performed. Patients with teeth that are weaker than normal or have been damaged may benefit from the placement of a dental crown. This includes teeth that have extremely large fillings that affect the integrity and strength of the tooth, and teeth that have had root canal therapy performed and require extra protection.

Should I consider a dental crown?
