What can cause sensitive teeth?

There are a variety of reasons why a patient may develop sensitive teeth. Below are just some of the believed factors that can contribute to sensitivity:

  • Brushing too hard
  • Using a hard-bristled toothbrush
  • Gum recession
  • Cavities
  • Infection/inflammation
  • Gingivitis
  • Broken teeth (chipped/cracked)
  • Bruxism (clenching and grinding of the teeth at night)
  • Plaque buildup
  • Highly acidic mouthwash use
  • Acidic foods
  • Dental procedures

Additionally, some patients just have higher sensitivity in their teeth. This may be due to worn tooth enamel or just genetics. Patients with natural sensitivity may benefit from the use of a toothpaste used for sensitive teeth.

How can I address sensitivity?

Determining the reason for sensitivity will help the dentist determine the best response and treatment. Mildly sensitive teeth that occur natural can benefit from using certain toothpastes designed to reduce sensitivity. Sensitivity caused by decay may be improved with a filling. Patients who have sensitivity caused by worn enamel may benefit from certain restorative procedures such as the placement of a dental crown or a porcelain veneer. Infection and inflammation can be a result of periodontal disease, and treatment of this condition may also reduce the severity of sensitivity. Additionally, some patients experience sensitivity following certain procedures such as the placement of a filling or tooth bleaching treatments. All of these can be addressed with the help of the dental team at McDowell Dental Group. During an initial evaluation, our team can assess the cause of the sensitivity and provide an effective solution that fits a patient’s needs.
