Aging is a game involving a bunch of giving and take— you may gain wisdom, but you lose the collagen and elastin in your skin. Luckily, with cosmetic procedures and dermal fillers, you can temporarily restore your skin to a more youthful state. Here at McDowell Dental Group, we treat some of our patients with dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm to help them gain back their confidence and get rid of their wrinkles at the same time. But what exactly are dermal fillers and how can you tell if you’re a good candidate for them? Read on to learn more.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are made up of an ingredient called hyaluronic acid which is found naturally in your body. Once injected into your fine lines and wrinkles, these fillers temporarily fill them in and add more volume to your skin.
How Long Do They Last?
Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to this question because it all depends on how your skin responds to the filler being used. However, in most patients fillers last up to a year.
How Do They Differ From Botox?
If you are new to any cosmetic procedure, you may not be familiar with the difference between dermal fillers and Botox. For starters, fillers work completely differently than Botox. Where fillers fill in the lines on your face, Botox relaxes the facial muscle which temporarily alleviates the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, dermal fillers are traditionally used on the lower part of your face, where Botox is used from the eyes up.
Are They Safe?
Just Like with anything, there are certain side-effects to dermal fillers. Although a slight amount of redness, bruising, and swelling is common afterward, it should go away after just a few days. If you experience any adverse reactions or if these symptoms don’t subside, make sure to contact McDowell Dental Group right away.
