What can be done about a gap between the front teeth?

smiling woman holding invisalign bracesNothing is more noticeable in the smile than a gap between the two front teeth. This condition can occur for a variety of reasons. It might be genetic, or it can occur due to missing teeth that cause the front teeth to shift out of place. Patients might avoid bringing up this imperfection for fear that they may be told they need months or years of orthodontic work to address. Fortunately, the team at McDowell Dental Group of Abington, PA offers several different approaches to help patients with these specific types of gaps. This includes the use of Invisalign, composite resin bonding, or porcelain veneers.

What are some ways to address gaps between the front teeth?

There are a few different approaches that a patient can take to resolve this issue. At McDowell Dental Group, we may recommend some of the following options:

  • Invisalign orthodontics. Instead of having metal bracket and wire braces that may be unsightly on the teeth, patients can reposition the teeth with clear aligner trays called Invisalign. Invisalign uses plastic trays that fit over the dental arch to reposition the teeth for better bite alignment and to close up spaces between teeth.
  • Composite resin bonding. Also known as “dental bonding,” composite resin bonding can be used to disguise these gaps between teeth. The dentist will apply the material in-between the teeth, then file and polish it to look like natural tooth enamel. This is a same-day solution for a gap in the smile.
  • Dental veneers. These thin shells of porcelain are custom-fabricated to match the patient’s tooth color. They are bonded onto the two front teeth to widen them and disguise the imperfection. Dental veneers are more expensive than resin bonding, but are stain-resistant and can last 10-20 years with proper care.
